    Leather-and-stick shields

    Hi all,

I'm doing an article on shields for Xerxes' Million in about a month, and I need basic advice on construction from those who've made your own (not least because I'll have to make one too at some point). The types I'm talking about are the pelta/"taka" and spara, consisting of straight sticks woven through a leather sheet.

Is tanned leather or rawhide better? What weight?
Should it be soaked in hot or cold water?
How are the rim and grips attached?

I'm thinking that the best wicker material available in my area is just willow, but the most historically-accurate material for a Persian spearman would be either common or giant reed. Any thoughts on that?

I know of the Dura Europos findings and I'll be trying to get a look at Simon James' report soon, noting however that these are at least half a millennium after my time period.

    Thanks for any advice.

Probably rawhide and as heavy as possible. (unsplit).

Aye, what I can find out seems to be pointing this way.
