    Lightbulb Jeff Noll's Book and a US M 1872

    Guys: Got the book and a US Mod 1872 Saber. WORK BROS. Chicago it sez....Any ideas from the experts as to era of manufacture ?? Sitting there with a S&F and a Mounted Artillery....

    Hard to tell with any certainty, but it was likely between 1880, when this "Field and Cavalry Officer's Sword" was adopted to replace the M1872 Cavalry Officer's sword, and 1902 when it was in turn replaced by the M1902 All-Officers' sword. The M1880 was slightly lighter than the 1872 and was a 1/8" narrower. The most easily seen difference is the M1872 had a stopped fuller, the M1880 had an unstopped fuller. Here are the two models, M1872 on top, M1880 below.

    I haven't checked Bezdek - he might have some dates for the retailer which would help further narrow down the date.

    Bazelon says Work bros. was a Chicago clothing supplier dating 1880's to mid 1900s. A nice Private label, likely made by Ames.
