    WD-40 and leather?

    Does WD-40 damage leather (on handles for instance)?

    I think it would (or so I've read elsewhere). There is a general feeling that mineral oils are best avoided for leather and animal or plant derived oils are better. I suppose if it is cow leather then neatsfoot oil is the most appropriate, but the 'harm' done by mineral oils is probably related to their more volatile components. Thus the oil left behind by WD-40 is probably less of a problem than the carrier fluid which applies it, which judging by its behaviour is composed of shorter chain molecules. That is just a guess, however.

    WD-40 is a solivant used to dessolve rust and lubercate metal. So it will damage leather.
