The Japanese are quite lucky to have available to them styles which have been directly and intentionally transferred for generations. To say that there have not been countless modifications, revisions, omissions, and mistakes by the transmitters, however, is a mistake. These styles are not pure wells, to be compared to the clouded waters of those attempting to breathe life into old traditions by revitalizing them. I happen to admire those people who decide to try and reconstruct old martial ways from manuscripts. It is a difficult and painstaking process, if done with any kind of exactness, much more so than simply learning a style already in existance. I think it would be a mistake for those practicing Japanese martial arts to sniff haughtily at other groups trying to revieve their martial traditions as well. Borrowing from extant martial arts and claming them for yourselves is one thing - reading primary texts and attempting to mold them into something vital and alive is something else entirely. Gabe.
