I am keenly interested in historical reconstruction, however, I know that my first attempts at 1600 rapier-play looked an awful darn lot like my 1989 foil-play. Very tricky business, that. Learning a wide variety of martial disciplnes helped... for example, Kendo helped me get past some footwork problems I had, trying to follow the historical clues.
