Phil Tom brings over twenty-five yeras of experience in the research and restoration of
antique arms from China, the Islamic World, India, Mainland Southest Asia and the
Philippines, and Eastern Europe. Through extensive study and examination of fine examples
in museums and private collections, the level of knowledge he has gained in their
historical development, manufacturing technique and aesthetic traditions enable him to
offer the international community high levels of conservation and restoration
services.
His blade polishing is done by hand, with the goal of bringing into view the beauty and
metallurgical character of the steel, coupled with the necessity of maintaining the
original contours and dimensions of the blade to the greatest extent possible.
His services have been valued by collectors of fine antique arms so that these wonderful
relics of human history may gain a new lease on life.

Author of "Some Notable Sabers of the Qing Dynasty in the Metropolitan
Museum of Art", to be published in 2001 in Metropolitan Museum Art Journal, Volume 36.
- Addressed the Society of Ethnogrpahic and Historical Edged Weapons
Collectors of Israel with lecture on Ming and Qing armes-blanches,
Tel Aviv, December 7, 2000.
- Advisor on Chinese armament to the National Maritime Museum, Haifa,
Israel, for special exhibition on piracy.
- Historical consultant for documentary telecast "Oriental Firearms" (part
of the Tales of the Gun Series distributed by The History Chanel,
2000.
- Curator and Conservator for "Sword & Brush: Art from China's Martial
Tradition", exhibit at Great River Taoist Center, Washington, DC,
September 30 - October 3, 1999.
- Masters of Arts degree in History, University of Hawaii, Manoa campus,
1983.
