Marc, I thought you might like to see this image I came across via the site referenced below. Unfortunately, I can't seem to recall how I got there from within the site (or perhaps they've altered it), so I don't have the text description. The Mongols are on the left, I believe. I had another thought, inspired by seeing those "coats". Somewhere, a long while ago, I read that the crusaders employed very heavy felt (an inch thick?) as armor for the foot troops (and horses?) on the march. It proved very effective against sniping by the skilled Saracen (is that term antiquated?) archers. It must have been murder in the hot Middle Eastern sun, though. Felt was in widespread use in Central Asia.
