As to the saber and its role as a weapon and sports implement: I've always found that voluntary restricting your horizon limits one's perspective. That goes for modern fencers not wanting to now about historical styles just as well as for historical fencers closing off their horizons to more modern styles. But then, the nature of prejudice is not to foster understanding. In the end, it's not a system's inherent merits or the weight and dimensions of the weapon, or the stridency of one's claims that determine which fencing ideology is "more lethal". It's the skill and experience of the fencer. After all, you don't need a saber or rapier to kill someone. A pencil or rolled-up newspaper can do the job as well. Not that I'd care for being able to use either for such sinister purposes... Chris
