is the sabre. It has been in continuous use since at least the 7th century, with remarkably few changes: I can take a US civilwar cavalry sabre and the sword of charlemagne, and show you design similarities so precise that everything else is like options at a car lot. It's just that western europe is a latecomer to this weapon.... I'm not just being pedantic here. There are harsh differences between sabre and sword. They're related. They're even cousins (sisters:dussack/tasak,messer/parasztkes,kilij,somefalchions). But it's not the same to fight with them.
