I have to disagree with you on several points there, Nick. First, Chris IS sarcastic. Keep your eye out for further posts of his that you are not involved in, and I think you will eventually come to agree with me on this. Sarcasm is rude to lots of people. If we could see his face and hear his voice and had known him personally for a little while, more people here would probably just roll their eyes and say "there goes Chris again" or they might just lagh, or overlook it. I don't speak from knowing Chris any better than you do, I'm just speaking from my experience with sarcastic people and my experience with written posts. (All bulletin boards seem to have this problem, but if you put the same people in a phone conference, or better yet in the same room, everyone gets along. Go figure) BUT sarcasm is not rude to everyone. Not only that, in lots of cultures, you are expected to either have much thicker skin than most people on this thread have displayed, or else you watch how you phrase things better. In some cultures, you would still be reeling from the comments you left yourself open for. "But we are not in those cultures" I hear you thinking (conjecture, obviously). Well, "yes we are" I say. We are from lots of cultures here on the forum, different things are said in different cultures, and adults have a lot of ways of acting. That doesn't mean that Chris couldn't have been a lot more polite, but if you are used to sarcasm, he really doesn't come across as that rude in most of his posts. I speak from some experience here too, I have travelled and lived all over the world, studied lots of cultural anthropology, and daily deal with people from all over the world. My point here is not to chastise you, I would like to add, in case it comes across that way. Just to inform. And as much as I love Cyrano, he is clearly a product of a culture, time, and a philosphy, and the majority of his suffering he brought upon himself. (His freedom he brought on himself too, but they aren't inextricably tied together.) I would posit that the quote you cite exemplifies an attempt to control that which is uncontrollable. "Permit none else to utter them"? How? And for God's sakes, Why? I am at a loss for a good source quote here, but there is a power greater than the power to laugh at one's self, and that is to let others laugh at you. The more enlightened will laugh along with them. (Trust me though, I know how hard that can be ;-)) Cyrano could back up his statements and his actions with his belligerence and steel, something no longer as acceptable in our culture. I think a softer, more "go with the flow" attitude is more viable and effective in our world today. Think what Cyrano could have accomplished if he had made some effort to get along with more people. But the choice was his, and he knew it. So, lets see, what was my point...ah yes. Chris could be more "polite," no argument there. But I also see that many here are quick to take offense. I doubt that they are so quick about it in person. My point is not to defend Chris, it is to point out how responsibility and power can be taken by those who are reacting to him. If one isn't angry, or if one is tired of a thread, just ignore it. End of story, go do something productive for one's own life. I am posting this because I see miscommunication going on, where it seems everyone else sees rudeness. In this light, defending one behavior is hardly ridiculous, would you not agree?
