    Tsuka-ito question,.

    Hi All,

Was leather ever used to bind the handles of Showa period swords?

    Bernie,

Do you mean in place of the cloth ito? It seems like I've seen this one time over the years. If you mean a leather, shrink-fit cover over the tsuka - yes, I've seen many like that. They are tight, and not meant to be removed. Do you have one?

    Hi Bruce,

Sorry for the delay, but I'm referring to the handle itself.

Yes, so am I. I've seen many handles (tsuka) shrink-wrapped in a leater cover that is not removable. As to leather ito instead of cotton or silk, I THINK I've seen one, but not sure. A good place for this question would be on the Military Sword forum at NMB: http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/forum...ords-of-japan/
