    Heraldry help please

This crest is on my very new to me Pillin 1897 Victorian Royal Engineers. I realise it’s dreaming to think of identifying the officer although we’re only looking at a few years around the turn of the century, but I’m curious as to how this crest would be described? No initials to assist identity. Charlie

I think it would be described as a Griffin's (or Gryphon's) head, erased. There are a lot of families use the Griffin's head, some with other identifying features like a crown or collar which would rule them out for yours.

Unfortunately there are lots of families which use a plain griffin's head like this.

    P. S. See plate 66 of fairbairn's family crests.
