    My 4 small swords, blue n gilt is french but unsure of rest

    That is a nice brace of swords. The fine hilt piercings are very intricate and attractive..

    Nice. I am thinking the first one is French (perhaps with a later replaced blade) and the others are English. Enjoy!

    I find it is very hard to try and assign a nationality to smallswords, as the styles all over Western Europe tended to copy what was done in France for most of the 18th century.

    Four very nice smallswords.
    Max hits the nail on the head with his comment.
    I've noticed that quite a lot of them have little or no information on the blades, a fair proportion of the ones that I've seen, have the furbishers details on the scabbard mounts, but, due to the fact that the scabbards are so rare these days, that information is lost.

    I find the Bashford Dean catalogue somewhat useful and Arms&Armor just did a bit on their blog including Washington's sword with the pierced hilt parts. I had recently adopted an example that can be seen in the pinned smallsword thread.
