    Again, not quite...

By tuning the blade's harmonics, you could produce a high pass filter for getting rid of your A/C line hum when playing Moody Blues, or you could add an active peizoelectric drive element to provide non-harmonic waveform summation and give yourself enough distortion to get your Blood Groove on.

Now if there were only a way to incise grooves in the sword so you could scratch it like a vinyl.

    *ponders*

I wonder what a Hamon sounds like... ;-)

    *turns his back on you*

Hey, wait a minute. Is that Bette Midler I hear coming from your WinAmp?

I'll post some pics soon in another thread. Probbably under one of the Iron Age Artifacts topic headings.

    Yeah, well I wasn't.

    *turns up the Bette*

    haha.

I know, i was just making a show. So we'd get further off topic.

You know, so a moderator would step in and say "hey, you're so far off topic..."

Sooooo.... I'll have a few videos of some harmonics tests.

If you really want to check the nodes of your sword, just sprinkle some salt or sugar along the blade and call yourself on your cell phone. Put the vibrating cell phone up against the pommel, let it sit for a second or two, and look at where the salt is.

    Them's yer nodes.

    Yarrrrr.

I was driving back home after a trip to Wal-Mart today and a Bette Midler song came on the radio. Although I immediately felt sick, a thought came to mind about your “node viborator idea”.

Wouldn’t this harmonic vibration cause the salt particles to settle or halt on the less resonating areas of the blade? I.e. salt particles would rest on dead spots (before and aft) of the nodes rather than the nodes themselves?

Where are the vids? Are you trying to edit out Bette in the background?

    Node

A node is a spot that doesn't vibrate up or down. It's the NODE. Think axle, or fulcrum.

Or the pivot of a see saw.

The ANTINODE is the point of greatest deflection.

Node luck with the videos yet, but they'll be forthcoming. I have to ship my sony camcorder off to be repaired/replaced for free... but it means I'm without a functioning easy-USB-hookup video camera for about four weeks.

    Grr..

Good news is my new top came in for my Tracker. they said to wait three to four days before they even shipped it... great!

    It got here yesterday.

    I ordered it tuesday.

    YAHOOOOO!

    www.4wheelonline.com

    They rock.

Anyhow, photos of the new truck top, and videos of a piece of metal being vibrated and showing off its nodes very shortly. I might steal my buddy's video camera at the guild meeting and do the youtube upload thing.

    Rocketh oneth,
    Rion

    Pour some sugar on me

I just had to make that reference...

But be sure that when you put your sugar on the sword, that it's not humid, or you'll have a hot, sticky sweet sword, dripping goo from your head down to your feet.

Actually, I've seen someone use confectioner's sugar for case-hardening steel, but I'm not sure about those sugar cookies I got with Casenite sprinkled on them. I think I'll leave that one off my ingredient equivalence list for now.

Thumbs up I got my camera back!

    And my car!!!

New video processor for the camera, and a new power steering pump for the Santa Fe.

    w00t!

Anyhow, I haven't forgotten the harmonics thing.

I'll be doing a quick demo for my local guild sometime this week (and doubling up as a physics class demo) so I should have a vid or two relating to this thread on youtube soon.

Oh, and the 45 pounder didn't happen. The guy couldn't come up with the 1200 bucks I needed to get started on it for him.

    Go figure.

The steel alone was going to cost almost 400 bucks!

    Anyhow, harmonics, harmonics, harmonics.

    *cranks up the Bette Midler*

    hello

This is all very interesting, I had know idea that there was this much to harmonics on a sword. A video on how to obtain nodes would be very appreciated.
...In this world, there are people who swing swords with no skill, but with great reason.

    Getting a new tripod tomorrow...

    but here goes nothing, right?

Youtube to the rescue... I'll post a nice one of a bar, and maybe one of a decently tapered sword too, but here's something to get you started:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wi0lZUAuJGo

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGotN7h6l2Q&NR=1

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOMiowrff0Y

That last one is really interesting.

Anyhow, back in a few days with more data. Maybe even from the blade I'm working on!

    Omgwtfbbq

    Weak Sauce.

When I got the post update in my email I actually said "wtf?"

    But very nice.

Telling, as well, that you decided to exercise your artistic abilities in portraiture.

Hmm... is that admiration I detect, Mr. Stamper?

    *turns up the Bette*

I'd jump in my Roflcopter, but my lolerskates are in the shop.

    Salty Motley FTW!

    *ponders*

Maybe I should go on tour with Veruca Salt?

Maybe I'd get a chance to hang with Fairuza Balk!

    zzzzzz

    Night y'all.

By the way, what is weak sauce? Just curious. Is it a condition or something?
If I offended you with my paintbrush artwork I apologize. I was just trying to give you a chuckle. You have to admit though that you’re dark mysterious avatar is kinda spooky.
After seeing it for the first time I thought to myself ……

    Not quite

It's actually a few minutes after I screamed "This is Sparta!".

And yes, Stamper. I know, you're a funny guy. I'm a funny guy. We can tear each other to shreds and go buy each other a beer and everyone will be standing there wondering why the hell we didn't kill each other.

    *puts on rubber gloves*

Gotta go tho, it's time to go puts the lotion on.

Id buy you a beer, heck I might even buy you two if you’d get that darn node video up. I think its going to be hard to do with salt on a blade, maybe talcum powder would work?
The salt idea might work on a Japanese sword with bo-hi acting as a retainer for the salt while still showing us node patterns. On that though it would also be interesting to see the differences of this effect on heat treated vs. non heat treated bar stock.

Ah, the power of the dark lord!

    Mwuah ha ha ha.

I shall retain the salt upon the blade with the power of my MIND!

    /*The air crackles with electricity*

Actually, I'll simply build a rub-fence out of heavy paper to run the length of the blade.

I have to finish forging the whole dang thing tho.

Or, I could go with the original idea... and simply use a piece of mild steel... 1/8 inch should work... and forge in a fuller and distal taper... and leave the faces flat. That'd work!

Also, since the nodes don't move up and down, that's why the sand collects there. Or the salt.

    Or the talcum powder.

Sooooo... I just have to get the blade excited, and then pour the salt on, since it'll vibrate clean off in the areas that are moving, and stay put where the blade isn't moving.

However, the side rub fences will be virtually massless when compared to the "blade" and should cause the particles to bounce back towards the blade, providing a nice resupply of salt. So i don't dump a 5 pound bag of it on my shop floor.

    Rawr.

    :-p

Oh ya, I wanted to also show transverse nodes, since the sword has finite dimension in all three axes. Not sure how to show front to back vibration along the plane parallel to the edge, but certainly the difference would be minimal-ish. The other option is to adhere a thin strip of paper to the blade, perpendicular to the edge or spine, and apply the salt there, with the blade mounted edge-down in a vise.

    Rawr.

My research associate is coming in this weekend.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled, since the video will be hosted on youtube and WetSpark Innovations: http://rionmotley.blogspot.com
